About Fast Copy

The story behind FastCopy and why we built this resource for Windows users.

What Is FastCopy?

FastCopy is the fastest file copy, move, and backup utility available for Windows. Developed by Japanese programmer Shirouzu Hiroaki, it bypasses the Windows file cache and uses multi-threaded, overlapped I/O to push file transfers as close to your hardware’s maximum speed as possible. If you have ever waited minutes for Windows Explorer to copy a large batch of files, FastCopy is the tool that solves that problem.

The software handles everything from simple drag-and-drop file copies to automated backup scripts with SHA-256 verification. It supports UNICODE long paths (beyond the 260-character Windows limit), NTFS security attributes, alternate data streams, and include/exclude filtering with UNIX-style wildcards.

History and Development

FastCopy has been around for well over a decade, quietly earning a reputation among IT professionals and power users as the go-to file copying tool on Windows.

2004-2007

Shirouzu Hiroaki begins developing FastCopy as a lightweight alternative to the slow Windows copy handler. Early versions focus on raw speed through direct memory-mapped transfers and minimal OS caching overhead.

2008-2012

The tool gains traction in IT and system administrator communities. Key features like shell integration (right-click context menu), command-line interface for scripting, and ACL/ADS preservation are added. Portable mode is introduced so the tool can run from a USB drive without installation.

2013-2018

Multi-threaded read/write/verify operations arrive, taking advantage of modern multi-core processors and SSDs. UNICODE long path support is implemented, solving a common Windows limitation. SHA-256 and xxHash verification modes are added for data integrity checking.

2019-Present

FastCopy Pro is introduced for workplace/commercial use, adding silent data corruption detection (bit-rot detection) and enhanced verification features. The software continues to receive regular updates, with v5.11.2 released in December 2025. Windows 11 support is fully tested and confirmed.

The Developer

FastCopy is the work of Shirouzu Hiroaki (SHIROUZU Hiroaki), an independent Japanese software developer. He maintains the project through the official website at fastcopy.jp, where he publishes source code, changelogs, and documentation in both Japanese and English. His development philosophy is straightforward: make file copying as fast as the hardware allows, with zero bloat and zero external dependencies. FastCopy has no .NET Framework requirement, no heavy runtimes, and no unnecessary background services.

Who Uses FastCopy?

FastCopy has a wide range of users:

  • System administrators who need to move terabytes of data between servers and NAS devices on a regular basis
  • IT professionals who script automated backup routines using FastCopy’s command-line interface
  • Content creators working with large video and photo files who need fast transfers between editing drives
  • Everyday Windows users who are tired of waiting for Windows Explorer to finish copying a folder of files
  • Data recovery specialists who use FastCopy’s error-handling and verification modes to recover files from failing drives

What they share in common: they all need file transfers to be fast, reliable, and verifiable.
